As a history and geography teacher, I was excited to have the opportunity to use and review a product that is designed to inspire and teach children about other countries around the world. The booklet is designed with Walt Disney World Resort’s Epcot Theme Park in mind. In this post, Mouse Travel Matters shares that this particular theme park is geared more toward adults, and children often have a hard time staying interested (when compared to the other parks, like Magic Kingdom). This booklet was created to give children a little “pre-knowledge” of the nations represented at the World Showcase, in hopes of helping children stay more engaged during their visit.
The booklet is designed for lower elementary grades. It contains coloring pages for each represented country, complete with major cultural icons and fun facts.
When I was given the opportunity to review this product, I chose the “U.K. Booklet” portion of the bundle, because our family of three is headed there soon! I was pleased to see that the coloring pages included major icons and landmarks such as the U.K. flag, Big Ben, and a double-decker bus.
How We Used It
My own daughter is a little young for this booklet, so I invited my kindergarten-aged nephews over for an afternoon of fun, learning, and coloring. I was sent the booklet in PDF format, so I printed it off on regular, white printer paper. I decided to also print off photos of the actual photos from the U.K. (e.g., the flag, a soldier from Buckingham Palace, a double decker bus), so that my nephews could use those real-life photos as a guide when they colored.
My nephews loved it! They had so much fun coloring the pages, and we discussed everything from the pages along the way.
They have been learning about the American Revolutionary War in their class at school, so they were excited to learn more about the U.K. and its historical relationship to the U.S.A. (and I loved teaching them more about history!). They were particularly intrigued by the fact that rain boots are called “wellies” in the U.K.!
When the boys were finished coloring, we cut out each image (they were printed off as 2 per page), and we decided to make a little book. They taped the 1st page onto red construction paper (to make a cover) then we strung their little book together with white yarn. They were very proud of their creation and enjoyed every minute of the project. After it was complete, we sat down and read through the book again, and they excitedly read it with their parents when they got home.
My Thoughts!
I would highly recommend this fun “Epcot World Showcase Colouring Bundle”. Although I imagine it would be perfect for preparing for the World Showcase at Epcot, it is also great for simply teaching your children about other nations around the world. As a history and geography teacher, I truly believe that these types of activities are perfect for sparking interest in your children at a young age. My nephews have a newfound fascination for the U.K., and they are very excited that their little cousin gets to travel there soon!
